SEGWAY Information
What's a SEGWAY?
The SEGWAY Personal Transporter (PT) is a 2-wheeled, self-balancing, battery-powered transportation device able to turn in place and designed for one person. Each Segway has redundant on-board computers that interact with 5 Silicon Vibrating Structure Gyroscope chips (SIVSG's) to adjust motor speed at over 100 times per second. This keeps the Segway in balance. When you lean forward, the Segway moves forward. When you lean back, the Segway slows down, stops and goes in reverse. A LeanSteer® handlebar column allows for turning of the Segway.
How much do SEGWAY's cost?
The current retail price of a SEGWAY i2 is $6,200.00.
How fast can the SEGWAY PT travel?
SEGWAY's have a top speed of 12.5 miles per hour, which equates to 20 kilometers per hour. Riders are responsible for riding their SEGWAY's at appropriate speeds.
How far will the SEGWAY PT travel?
A SEGWAY Personal Transporter can travel up to 24-miles or last up to 24-hours on a single charge depending on riding conditions.
Are SEGWAY's water-resistant?
Yes. The machine is completely sealed to allow it to operate in wet weather.
Where is the SEGWAY PT manufactured?
SEGWAY's are assembled in the United States at Segway, LLC located in Bedford, New Hampshire.
Are SEGWAY's difficult to ride?
After completing the new rider orientation, riding a SEGWAY is instinctive for most. During the first 15 minutes, most people become at-ease with the SEGWAY, and then after half-an-hour, confident. If you can walk upright, you can ride a Segway.
How does the Segway PT safely integrate into pedestrian environments?
Just as pedestrians adjust their walking and jogging tempo to match that of those around them, SEGWAY riders adjust the SEGWAY for pedestrian environments. The machine was designed to respond to rider's movements - lean forward, go forward; lean back, go back - so that it could easily become an extension of one's own body. Thousands of hours of sidewalk and other pedestrian environment use by police, emergency medical technicians and postal workers is testimony to the safety and utility of the SEGWAY.
Does the SEGWAY PT work well indoors?
Yes. Every SEGWAY is designed to work anywhere people walk. In order to support indoor operation,
Michelin created a special tire that is non-marking. The SEGWAY i2 is narrower than a standard doorway and is clean and quiet. There are zero emissions.
Where can I safely and legally ride the Segway PT?
The SEGWAY is designed to operate in any place that you can safely walk. It will transport you over any surface where the wheels can gain traction, such as roads, sidewalks, grass, and dirt. California passed a law classifying the SEGWAY as a pedestrian, making it legal to ride wherever you can walk.
Where did the "Segway" name originate?
The inspiration came from the word "segue", which is defined as, "to transition smoothly from one state to another." A SEGWAY Personal Transporter (PT) empowers pedestrians, allowing them to go farther, move more quickly, and carry more than could ever be achieved by walking.
